Historical Sites in the Waupaca Area
WALKING TOUR OF HISTORICAL SITES IN RURAL on the CRYSTAL RIVER
The "less-than-a-mile" tour of these sites, wheter by foot or on wheels, will take you back to the bustling activities of the horse and buggy days when businesses here included stores, lodging places, saw and grist mills, foundry and craft shops. The village also boasted a post office, church, school, newspaper, doctor, dentist, bandstand and Macabee Hall.
Rural is a "Yankee town". All of the descendants originated from Great Britain or New England. This is unique in this area of Wisconsin; there are only two "Yankee towns" in Wisconsin.
Through the years Rural residents have sought to perpetuate the uniqueness of this historic spot where four bridges span the Crystal River and the mill race is still visible. Most of the sites on the list are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
